Privitized space exploration vs Government Sponsored
Im in a political mood, and was thinking about Obama's recent decision to scrap the Constellation program, which is our going back to the moon, and instead, through his budget, begin the groundwork towards privitization of space exploration(although not really, since you know he'd design it in a way where Big Brother still has a heavy say on everything).

This recent decision of his hits home for me, since my parents live in Rocket City (Huntsville, Alabama, one of NASA's homes) where Constellation provides jobs to a lot of people in that area. What is to become of them?

Do I want to see the privitization of space travel? Yes and no. I think either way the government is going to have its hands on everything regardless of how that plays out, but privitization might also pump money from corporations into the idea and get more people in space, so I like that idea.

But if the cancellation or reworking of Constellation causes people to be out of a job, in turn putting my stepdad out of a job since he caters to a lot of that crowd living in that city, then I can't support such a plan because it could hurt my family's ability to pay bills, and its killing jobs there, not creating.

2/7/2010 2:50:34 AM   From:  LiquidSnake   The worst part is I was just reading and actually discussing with my stepdad over the phone how Huntsville has faired quite well during this recession, but now it sounds like Obama is bringing the recession there. Sucks ass.
2/7/2010 3:24:50 AM   From:  LiquidSnake   And between my mom trying to burn the house down with unattended candles in the kitchen (they had to replace the oven, cabinets, stove top, and flooring, and my mom got some burns on her face from putting out the fire) and my stepdad losing some clients recently, this is horrible news at a time when they need money the most.
2/7/2010 3:44:44 AM   From:  LiquidSnake   My hope is the people involved with Constellation get at least an alternative job with NASA and not be totally unemployed. That's fine if that's the case, but we shall see...
2/7/2010 7:29:47 AM   From:  eddo   Privatization almost always leads to better things, money spent more efficiently, and somebody for the program to actually be accountable too.

I'm all for it- in many current gov't programs- including NASA.

2/7/2010 12:48:09 PM   From:  LiquidSnake   Oh I'm not discounting the benefits of it. I actually think it's the way to go. I just don't want to see my parents suffer for it, that's all.
2/7/2010 9:01:35 PM   From:  eddo   your parents can cater to the private space industry.
2/7/2010 9:09:20 PM   From:  LiquidSnake   Eh, we'll see. My stepdad is an expert networker, I'm sure he won't let this stop his business, just might throw a wrench in it.
2/8/2010 5:49:31 AM   From:  BCAR   Anything filtered through the Government cluster fu ck is going to give you around 10 cents worth of value for your dollar.

We should privatize everything but the military and the judicial system.
