Always and Never
Define 'always'. Then define 'never'. What do you feel is the impact of using these words when communicating with someone?

7/13/2008 6:56:26 AM   From:  Feckless Wench   Always is something that should be used with caution, no one knows what will happen tomorrow to change your ability to fulfil 'always'. Never is just a ridiculous word, for the reasons given for 'always'.
7/13/2008 6:56:35 AM   From:  beags   I try not to speak in absolutes- things change too fast.
7/13/2008 7:35:08 AM   From:  hugo   You always be assured of death and taxes.
7/13/2008 7:51:44 AM   From:  mercury   I never catch a break.
7/13/2008 8:18:31 AM   From:  eddo   al·ways [awl-weyz, -weez] –adverb 1. every time; on every occasion; without exception: He always works on Saturday. *** 2. all the time; continuously; uninterruptedly: There is always some pollution in the air. *** 3. forever: Will you always love me? *** 4. in any event; at any time; if necessary: She can always move back with her parents.
7/13/2008 8:19:45 AM   From:  eddo   nev·er [nev-er] -adverb 1. not ever; at no time: Such an idea never occurred to me.*** 2. not at all; absolutely not: never mind; This will never do.*** 3. to no extent or degree: He was never the wiser for his experience.
7/13/2008 8:22:12 AM   From:  Itza   Thank you for your replies. Just to clarify further (no, I'm not thick, I'm gathering data), in a non leap-year there are 8760 hours so therefore 59.5 hours is NOT always, is it? Also, 3 times per year is NOT always compared with 12 times per year and the opposite, 12 times a year is NOT never compared with 3 time a year?
7/13/2008 8:22:25 AM   From:  eddo   these are words, as Feckless and beags said, that should be used with caution, as there are few things that really are "always" or "never"
7/13/2008 8:25:47 AM   From:  Itza   What if the person using them is not exercising caution but is trying to send the recipient of the words on a journey of guilt?
7/13/2008 8:30:36 AM   From:  mercury   then you tell then to f off. guilt trippers suck. ALWAYS.
7/13/2008 8:33:54 AM   From:  Itza   Would you tell your own mother to F off, mercury? That's the quandary I'm in. I know she comes from a place of pain but her interpretation of certain situations is grossly exaggerated in the most negative way and she uses such absolutes.
7/13/2008 8:36:57 AM   From:  mercury   I have. Some people require blunt and to the point to get the message clearly. My mother is one that sometimes needs this approach to "get it". If you can tell her in a reasonable way that might be better, but don't rule it out. Respect is a two way street.
7/13/2008 8:38:57 AM   From:  mercury   but it sounds like your mother and my mother would make fabulous friends ;o)
7/13/2008 8:55:12 AM   From:  Feckless Wench   Everyone is entitled to their own truth. Perhaps your mother cannot see past that which she believes to be right?
7/13/2008 9:29:07 PM   From:  Ali   Always/never - words emotional extremists use to try and manipulate the rest of us into responding to their drama.
