Mother's Day
Sorry to disappoint you all. No disgusting pictures or swearing. I'm just wondering what you are all doing for your Mom or spouse on Mother's Day. It is kind of funny. Traditionally my mother's days have all been spent doing heavy labour. I guess it's fitting LOL. This year, the weather hasn't co-operated and we will likely not be building the deck we planned to.

Emily (my 8 year old) and I have signed up to do a 5km run this year. It's our first sponsored event and I am really looking forward to it. I bought a spa day for my Mom so my plans are set.

So what are you guys up to?

5/9/2008 7:41:26 AM   From:  Chi   Wow, that's pretty cool what you and your daughter are doing. Is it to benefit a certain cause? I don't think I will be doing jack for my mom this year, I'm still sorta mad at her about something. It's actually overall resentment from over the years, but what she did recently just broke the camel's back. I intend to go pay a visit and do something nice for my elderly grandmother though. For myself, we don't have anything planned. Maybe we'll do something last minute, although my bf works this whole weekend. I'll be happy just to get the beautiful, nice cards my kids usually make for me.
5/9/2008 7:42:02 AM   From:  mercury   on Saturday I'm taking Riley to a sex ed thing at the church (I'm scared!) and stopping by to see my mom before we head home. Unless I catch whatever the boys have had this week, in which case I won't stop by mom's because Al can't be exposed to illness right now. I'll probably pick up some flowers for her, or a perennial for her flower bed, and maybe... just maybe... I'll paint the mailbox she asked me to over a year ago. (I'm kind of tired of looking at it and tripping over it.) No idea what anyone has planned for me... probably nothing.
5/9/2008 7:47:44 AM   From:  Chi   Ooh, are you making her mailbox artsy or just painting it over regular for her, Merc?
5/9/2008 7:47:49 AM   From:  mercury   good luck on your run! that's pretty ambitious of your little one. mine would poop out before they started.
5/9/2008 7:50:33 AM   From:  emkay64   Awwww Chi and Merc need some TLC. Chi---I'm sorry you and your Mom aren't getting along. That's tough. The run should be fun. Something diferent to try, maybe a new tradition. I believe the proceeds are for children's hospital, but I'm not sure. Merc--- Sex Ed....OMG...I'm not ready for that yet :(
5/9/2008 7:51:43 AM   From:  emkay64   Emily can do 3 km easy, but we can walk it too, if need be. I'm keeping it stress free.
5/9/2008 7:53:42 AM   From:  emkay64   I love perennials! Oriental Poppies and Peonies are a couple that i have here. Great idea for gifts.
5/9/2008 7:53:57 AM   From:  mercury   she wants it artsy... I'm drawing a blank because she dictated direction: gerbera daisies. on All I can think to do is paint them all scattered and ghey. When I voiced my issue, she said "fine. whatever... just don't make it ugly." well. that's a rather relative statement that's hard to work around. Most everything that I like she thinks is ugly, so I'm at a loss.
5/9/2008 7:57:49 AM   From:  mercury   I could just dig around the yard! :P I've got a lot of spring bulbs that are mostly in bloom right now. I also have tons of wild violet, tiger lilies (the previous owner must have been obsessed with them or got a realllly good deal), a couple traditional lilies, hostas, trillium, shasta daisies, eccinacea, lavender and a bunch of other herbs. My beds are a mess, but they're there amongst the weeds.
5/9/2008 8:02:34 AM   From:  emkay64   Wow! She sure sounds ungrateful. Maybe a nice farm scene with your mother grazing with a gerbera daisy shoved up her ass would be fitting. J/K...thgat was rude...you could skip the farm scene. I like the idea of splatered daisies all over. Paint the mail box black first and then totally cover it with daisies. I think it would be great. I like the idea of jelly beans painted all over it and then varnished
5/9/2008 8:05:17 AM   From:  mercury   lmao! that sounds perfect! black would get the ugly label. as would a single drop of purple.
5/9/2008 8:06:10 AM   From:  mercury   ^^ (the farm scene= perfection)
5/9/2008 8:06:29 AM   From:  Chi   You should post before and after pics, Merc. I'm sure it will turn out lovely. Em- Did you guys train beforehand for the marathon? And your daughter is awesome. She can do 3k effortlessly and at her young age, sounds like quite the athlete. I need to discipline myself, I swear. I need to be more active and fit, little kids putting me to shame-lol.
5/9/2008 8:07:36 AM   From:  emkay64   Hmmm...no purple and no black huh? Paint it red first and then cover in white daisies with yellow centers.
5/9/2008 8:10:22 AM   From:  mercury   oh... in her mind it needs to match her house, even though it's 1/4 mile away from her house.... which is forest green with white brick and trim.
5/9/2008 8:11:49 AM   From:  emkay64   We just run a couple times a week. I think Emily likes it mostly because it's just her and I. I can do the 5 K, but i'm not pushing her. When I started running, I ran for a minute and walked for 2 minutes, and slowly I started working up my minutes until I could run consistently for an hour. We just take it easy. It was started just as a fun thing for us to do together. I'm not out to win the race. It isn't competitive, it is more of an accomplishment thing...and we get T-shirts LOL.
5/9/2008 8:11:56 AM   From:  Kethria   I got mom a pair of shoes and Omar and Adrian and I will probably make lunch for Mom and Peggy...
5/9/2008 8:12:10 AM   From:  mercury   and I bought a white one to avoid having to base coat it at all. The problem is that I feel no matter what I do, her expectations are already set and I won't meet them.
5/9/2008 8:13:39 AM   From:  emkay64   Merc...she won't appreciate it anyways, just wrap a "forest green" garbage bag around it, or you could wall paper it.
5/9/2008 8:14:54 AM   From:  emkay64   Decoupage? i don't do it, but it could be nice.
5/9/2008 8:18:39 AM   From:  mercury   she normally likes everything I make her, but... she doesn't have expectations when she's not expecting it and it's actually a gift from my own heart and head. And she doesn't get the creative process at all. I painted the current mailbox 15 years ago with ivy wrapping all around it when she moved back into the house after the fire. I did it on a whim. I was obsessed with ivy at the time. She got a birdhouse to match :o) I've never painted another mailbox. I've never cared to paint another mailbox... hell my own mailbox has stick-on numbers. My heart just isn't in it. I think the green garbage bag sounds fabulous.
5/9/2008 8:19:42 AM   From:  mercury   I have no patience for cutting around hundreds of intricate designs... or even one. decoupage is not for me.
5/9/2008 8:27:08 AM   From:  Chi   I like the idea of white or maybe a dark yellow for the background. Maybe get ideas from art and pictures online- if you would like to do pastels- http://www.bellacor.com/productdetail/235124.htm If you want to go with brighter colors- http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Gerbera-Daisy-Singles-Posters_i392331_.htm Those would look good with a white background. Only thing is that the dirt would look more apparent on white when it gets dirty.
5/9/2008 8:27:46 AM   From:  Chi   How about this on the sides of the mailbox? http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Gerbera-Spectrum-Posters_i358528_.htm :D
5/9/2008 8:29:27 AM   From:  Chi   Em- Yeah, I remember you telling me that before about doing runs with your daughter. I should really get in gear and do something like that.
5/9/2008 8:31:29 AM   From:  Chi   That sounds cool, Keth. Do you guys know what you might be making for them yet?
5/9/2008 10:10:06 AM   From:  Kethria   We were going to cook out but it will rain so maybe gumbo?
5/9/2008 1:57:04 PM   From:  mercury   thanks for all those, Chi ;o) I don't think painting just the sides will work... she's in a row of mailboxes and squashed between 2 others. I think I like the single one.. on the door, and then just paint the box and maybe scratch some loose daisy shapes into the wet paint. I'll try to remember pictures :o)
5/9/2008 8:36:03 PM   From:  Chi   Merc- That sounds nice:) Show us the final masterpiece:) Keth- Believe it or not, I don't think I've ever had gumbo. I'm thinking it's probably similar to sopa de mariscos, no?
5/9/2008 9:03:50 PM   From:  Ali   My brother and I got mom a gift certificate at a clothing store she likes. I won't get to spend any time with her because I'll be working. I'm also going to spend the day being thankful I'm not a mother as I'm sure I would suck at it.
5/10/2008 2:25:10 AM   From:  Feckless Wench   Mother's day has come and gone over here, we have it back in March. As for what I do....nothing, she's been dead 15 years. I used to visit her grave but somehow don't feel the need to anymore.
5/10/2008 9:02:14 PM   From:  Rani   Mom and I are having a girls day out! Just us!
5/12/2008 9:44:41 AM   From:  RaE   Happy Belated Mother's Day to all theJungle mothers!
5/12/2008 10:20:00 AM   From:  Chi   Thank you!:)
5/12/2008 11:35:11 AM   From:  mercury   thanks, RaE :o)
